We are Peterborough Sings!

We inspire together…

“Singing comes naturally and instinctively to most people – we do it to celebrate, we do it to commiserate – on the football terraces, in the pub, at weddings and at funerals … everyone can do it… and it has proven benefits for both physical and mental health and wellbeing.”

- William Prideaux, director

Founded in 2011, Peterborough Sings! is a music education charity which supports three adult choirs, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Community Chorus.

My heart was filled with smiles to see so many people singing... Peterborough Sings! is a real contribution to the world!

The charity also runs an extensive programme of education and outreach work to promote singing in the local community, including the Peterborough Schools’ Singing Strategy, and popular pop-up community singing projects Sing for Life and Men United in Song.

The bringing together of a male choir, a female choir and a mixed chorus under one umbrella is unusual enough. To that add the exceptional level of performance that those groups achieve, the type and scope of concerts and competitions and other events that they participate in and the outstanding performance partners with which they have shared a stage: all of this makes for something which - if not actually unique - is quite out of the ordinary!

“Over the last ten years I’ve had some amazing experiences and being in the choirs has given me more confidence, not just in singing but also in talking with others of all ages and presenting myself in formal situations. Peterborough Sings! has played a large part in my life and has helped me decide that music is something for me to pursue as a career.”

- Harvey Rutterford (Baritone)

Peterborough Sings! aims to make singing accessible to everyone regardless of age, gender, cultural, social or economic background and over the last decade has introduced literally thousands of local people to the challenges and joys of group singing, an experience which many have described as ‘empowering’ and even ‘life-changing’. The charity provides its members with exceptional performance opportunities: over the last decade world-class ensembles have visited Peterborough to collaborate with them, including the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Central Band of the RAF and the King’s Singers, making an enormous contribution to the city’s cultural offer.

Peterborough Sings! has been a part of my life for more than five years and it’s a privilege to be around in the same space and time as all of the wonderful people I have met across the choirs. I feel as though I have experienced enough to fill at least a very short lifetime; I am sure I would be nowhere near as charismatic, charming, funny or humble without the choirs.

“It gives me great pleasure supporting singers in developing their musical, vocal and performance skills. Whether a seven-year-old discovering choral singing for the first time through our schools outreach work, or an adult singer refining their karaoke tones into competition-winning performances, the thrill of them achieving what they never imagined possible has given me enough smiles to last a lifetime!”

- William Prideaux, director

They say singing is good for the soul and I find it does mine the world of good. Choir is the one constant that gives me guaranteed down time away from the stresses of everyday life with an incredible group of people that I consider family... singing with them is vocal magic!
— Michael Lynn (Tenor One)

What our trustees say…

“I am incredibly proud to be a part of the Peterborough Sings! family - the challenge, enjoyment, camaraderie and sense of achievement within the choirs has brought me so much happiness and pride! I hope my role as a trustee will give me the opportunity to help promote and showcase our talents to audiences near and far, and to encourage more people across our city and beyond to find their singing voice!”

“Music has always been an important part of my life but in joining Peterborough Voices I discovered the joy and exhilaration of collective singing and the power of women’s voices. I feel privileged to be a trustee of Peterborough Sings! and be part of an organisation that enables people of all ages and all sections of the community to participate in music activities and events. Getting more people singing and seeing the enjoyment it brings is so rewarding!”

“I'm excited to be in a position to help shape the music education opportunities we can offer Peterborough and the local area, and I would really like to see as many people from as many different walks of life as possible getting involved with the great work Peterborough Sings! does, from school singing days, to project choirs, or simply coming along to see a concert!”

The Peterborough Sings! family of choirs ALWAYS welcome new members and no previous experience is necessary.
